The LA Phil’s Toyota Symphonies for Youth (TSFY) concerts invite children ages 5 to 11 to soak up the sounds of a world-class orchestra while experiencing the thrill of live performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall
Each season featured four concerts, each with their own musical genre and activity book the keep children engaged long after the concert's end. I worked closely with the LA Phil team to bring each activity book to life through vibrant illustrations and work sheets inspired by the music. In total, I designed an illustrated a total of nine unique activity books that they continue to host on their website for children and families to download.
LA Phil
I worked closely with the LA Phil team to create and hone activity ideas that would help children learn about music through design and illustration and interactivity.
The range of activities and information design spanned crafts, puzzles, diagrams of music instruments, coloring pages, and more. My personal favorite was a pair of glasses kids could cut out and wear to celebrate the Philharmonic celebrate it's 100th birthday.
While the base program design relied on a systematic layout that could fit a range of activities, the covers were the main space the LA Phil wanted to experiment with different illustration styles. Each were inspired by the music featured in each symphony, leading to a range of color palettes, styles, and compositions that kept thew series looking varied—bound to appeal to a range of audiences.
Some cover illustrations were repurposed as art prints and sold in the LA Phil and Hollywood Bowl gift shops.
